John's brilliant idea
John had a wonderful idea about dealing with the irritations of dealing with a 13-year old son. Every time you want to throttle him, give him a hug.
Of course, we told him we were doing that. So the day is filled with, "Come over here, I want to give you a hug," and "Time for another hug!" "What did you say? That deserves a BIG hug."
There is that edge of sarcastic fun in it all that he relates to. And he enjoys knowing that his new sense of self is making an impact. And - amazingly - it helps keep it all in perspective.
It wouldn't work for everyone -- he is the hugable type. But it is amazing how it can dissipate the surges of anger and disbelief.
